Aeroplane Heaven DC-3 in the livery of Canadian Air Force C-47A Dakota Serial no.12927, Registration C-FROD owned by Buffalo Airways Ltd.
A Brief History of C-47A no.12927
Constructed in Oklahoma City USA and taken on strength in 1942 with the USAF as serial 42-108918, this DC-3 was sold to the RCAF and registered as KG545 as a Dakota III. In 1944 she was transfered to 271th RAF Squadron and flew on D-Day during "Operation Market Garden" in September 1944. After war, she was flown to the CAF Trenton, sold from the USAF and designated as a CC-129 serial no.12927.
Joe McBryan purchased 12927 as a " barn find" for Buffalo Airways Ltd in 1980 from storage in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He flew to Hay River, NWT where it remained stored for another15 years. It was featured in an Edmonton museum until 2012. C-FROD returned to Hay River. Airworthy, was featured in the National Film Board of Canada's film "Lost Over Burma". The CC-129 had been flown 4 times in 35 years of private ownership.
The last flight of C-FROD was from Trout Lake to Fort Simpson, NWT where, after delivering fuel for forest fighters at Trout Lake, she ironically ran out of fuel and crashed on the way back to Fort Simpson. There were no fatalities, but the iconic aircraft was damaged, and then subsequently stored at Buffalo Airlines still in it's original RCAF livery.
