Rostrup Airfield is a small airfield in Lower Saxony (Germany), which has been used only as a glider airfield since 1966 after military use in World War II. It is located northwest of the Zwischenahner Meer, a lake in the district of Ammerland, which is why you have a beautiful view of the surroundings during the flights.
History:
In October 1937, the Bad Zwischenahn Air Base in the district of Rostrup was put into service as the "Zwischenahn Naval Base". Initially, it was only equipped with a grass track. Initially, it served as a base station for the "Luftdienstverband I. of the Reich Ministry of Aviation. Before the beginning of World War II, it was taken over by the Luftwaffe of the Wehrmacht and renamed as Seefliegerhorst Zwischenahn. The 800-metre-long runway was not sufficient for landings of larger aircraft, which is why it was extended to the northwest in 1940. Three new asphalt runways were created. These had been laid out in the shape of a triangle, which made the airfield one of the most modern facilities of its time.
Between 1943 and 1944, Erprobungskommando 16 was relocated to Bad Zwischenahn to test the new Messerschmitt ME 163 Komet rocket fighter. After that, Kampfgeschwader 53 was stationed at the air base, which had dropped the Fieseler Fi 103 cruise missiles known as V1 over England with converted ME 111s. These sorties were discontinued in January 1945 due to the lack of fuel. Until the end of the Second World War, only aircraft of the weather reconnaissance squadron 1 took off from the Bad Zwischenahn airfield.
The airfield was attacked a total of four times by bombing raids by the US Air Force. Despite high losses of ammunition, the air base remained operational. After the end of the Second World War, flight operations were also discontinued. The remains were blown up by the occupying forces. Only one of the runways and a hangar remained and were used by the Canadian Air Force as a makeshift airfield until 1946.
In 1951, the Royal Air Force took over the airfield and built a hospital there. As a result, several buildings that still exist today were created as quarters for officers. After the withdrawal of the British in 1958, the hospital was renamed and moved to the neighboring town of Westerstede in 2008.
Present-day use:
There is nothing left of the former air base today, except for parts of the concrete ring road and a few scattered buildings.
In the north, the Luftsportverein Oldenburg/Bad Zwischenahn has been operating a glider airfield with a grass runway since 1966. South of it there has been a golf club since 2000, which is why there is also a high fence on runway 27, which is supposed to protect the course and the planes from golf balls.
