Doolittle Raiders participated the Tokyo Raid bombing in the WW2 which is a sad story in the history of bold avenging without considering the effectness and consequence. Lt. Col. James H. Doolittle proposed the idea and was the wing leader who piloted B-25B #402344
On 18 April 1942, 16 B-25B Mitchell bombers, each with a crew of five, were launched from the US Navy aircraft carrier USS Hornet, in the Pacific Ocean. There were no fighter escorts. After bombing the military and industrial targets, the crews were to continue westward to land(?) in China (Actually all of them crashed and most of the crews were killed during or after the crashes).

Thanks for your quick response to my request. I do have some information you might have missed regarding the effect this raid had on the war effort: this raid caused the Japanese high command to assign more experienced fighter pilots to the defense of Tokyo for fear of more US raids. Before this raid only less experienced pilots had been assigned to the defense of Tokyo, because they did not think the US could reach Tokyo from the air. This raid had the effect of boosting the morale of US civilians as well as military personnel. Further, there was no fighter support for the raid because the bombers were launched from an aircraft carrier, which had never been done before. All in all, it was a brilliant tactic, and worth the cost. The crews were all volunteers, and all knew there was little chance of survival.
