60 weather / cloud presets from real life

Hi all,

This is for the meteorology enthusiasts among us.

I've produced 60 weather presets, combining cloud data of around 15 real-life cloud types.

Though fellow simmers have already released absolutely outstanding and beautiful presets here, I produced this set as I was interested to see how real life cloud types would look like in the Sim if their meteorological parameters are inserted accurately, with regards to the right altitude, density and coverage for each cloud type. I'm quite impressed by how accurately the Sim is capable of reflecting all of them.

Though I usually prefer flying with live weather, using a preset can sometimes bring a new experience as it allows you to choose from a variety of weather scenarios that otherwise rarely occur where you want to fly.

All presets feature the standard atmosphere with a westerly wind.

Installation:

Extract the downloaded zip file and drop the folder in your Community folder.

The following cloud types and combinations are included, as observable in real life (in alphabetical order). Each preset features one, two or three cloud layers.

  • 1 layer - Altocumulus castellanus
  • 1 layer - Altocumulus floccus
  • 1 layer - Altostratus fibratus
  • 1 layer - Altostratus nebulosus 1
  • 1 layer - Altostratus nebulosus 2
  • 1 layer - Cirrocumulus floccus
  • 1 layer - Cirrostratus nebulosus
  • 1 layer - Cirrus fibratus
  • 1 layer - Cirrus floccus
  • 1 layer - Cumulonimbus

  • 1 layer - Cumulus congestus 1
  • 1 layer - Cumulus congestus 2
  • 1 layer - Cumulus fractus
  • 1 layer - Cumulus mediocris

For reference, this is what the latin cloud types names mean in English:

  • Altocumulus castellanus: High level tower-like heaps; usually found between 2,000-7,000 meters
  • Altocumulus floccus: High level flaky heaps; usually found between 2,000-7,000 meters
  • Altostratus fibratus: High level fibrous layer; usually found between 2,000-7,000 meters
  • Altostratus nebulosus: High level foggy layer; usually found between 2,000-7,000 meters
  • Cirrocumulus floccus: Very high level flaky heaps; usually found between 6,000-18,000 meters
  • Cirrostratus nebulosus: Very high level foggy layer; usually found between 6,000-18,000 meters
  • Cirrus fibratus: Very high level fibrous clouds; usually found between 6,000-18,000 meters
  • Cirrus floccus: Very high level flaky clouds; usually found between 6,000-18,000 meters
  • Cumulonimbus: Low- to high level heaped rain clouds; usually found between 6,000-18,000 meters
  • Cumulus castellanus: Low- to medium level tower-like heaps; usually found between 500-6,000 meters
  • Cumulus congestus: Low- to medium level piled up heaps; usually found between 500-6,000 meters
  • Cumulus fractus: Low-level broken heaps; usually found between 200-2,000 meters
  • Cumulus mediocris: Low-level medium-sized heaps; usually found between 200-2,000 meters
  • Nimbostratus: Low-level rainy layered clouds; usually found between 500-5,500 meters
  • Stratocumulus floccus: Low-level flaky heaped layer; usually found between 500-2,000 meters
  • Stratus nebulosus: Low-level foggy layer; usually found between 0-2,000 meters

Najnowsze zmiany for 1.1

- Fixed a few cloud sets where wind was missing.
- Fixed a could set that was broken and did not appear in the Sim menu.
- Fixed a few of the 3 layered cloud sets that weren't clearly recognisable as '3 layer could sets'.

It seems you are trying to create different densities in the same clouds with altitude, but it doesn't work that way, they are always three completely independent layers. I'm also not sure you are using the scattering parameter correctly, as it seems to have a huge impact on the type of cloud, and isn't just a random parameter. For example the cumulonimbus clouds get very tall more like they should be at about 60% scattering yet you have it at 0%.

hey just dropping by to say this is a solid addon for the sim by far better than relying on live weather functionality and adobo presets. instant 5-star rating! one last touch if you ever want to collaborate on weather preset related stuff than feel free to do so I am a weather developer as well.

For the layers, yes, I know they are independent layers. It creates more diversity within the same cloud layer if using two or three layers for it with varying levels of scattering and altitude. For the scattering of Cumulonimbus, I chose zero because Cumulonimbus clouds are usually found as a heavy tower within one place and not scattered across the entire sky. Despite some handy functions, the weather module within MSFS is unfortunately still quite limited. E.g., it does not allow for the creation of just one or two Cumulonimbus towers. It will render them across the entire globe, which is obviously unrealistic.

Many thanks for your kind words! I indeed have a question. Do you know how to create layout.json and manifest.json files so that this set of presets can be installed into the Community folder instead of the 'weather' folder? That would be something I'm interested in. :)

I cleaned the presents folder. Your files will be copied to it ??. Thank you

The files go in the Presets folder, that's correct.

Can't find the proper file in the Microsoft store edition...

Thanks for commenting, I'm unfortunately not aware as to whether the 'weather' folder exists in any hidden subfolders in the Microsoft Store version. (You have probably already searched your Microsoft Flight Simulator main directory for a folder called 'weather'. Maybe search for a folder called 'presets', that may be the one.) There must also be a way to create a layout.json and manifest.json file so the presets can be dropped in the community folder, but I haven't yet looked into how to create such files. Does anyone else have an idea?
