The odyssey of Ulysses according to Armin Wolf
Of all the Bush trips I've done so far, this is the most elaborate in terms of research. The saga of the wanderings of Odysseus, by the ancient writer Homer, has enthralled me from a young age. But now the book fell into my hands again and I don't know for how many times I read it. I never really thought about locating the fairy tale-like, fabled places Odysseus had been. For me, the whole story always played out mentally somewhere in the Aegean. But after 10 years of crisscrossing the Aegean Sea, Odysseus would have known every wave by its first name and for this reason would have had to realize at some point where he really was instead of continuing to wander around.
By chance I came across a book by the historian Armin Wolf. He analyzed Homer's Odyssey over fifty years. From cardinal points, number of days, wind directions, sailing or rowing, he developed an abstract geometric pattern and matched it with corresponding maps. In addition, he looked at cultural and archaeological features at the determinable locations. The result was a distance of almost 2,300 nautical miles that Odysseus could have traveled. This in turn inspired me to recreate the entire Odyssey as a bush trip.
As you would expect, most of the route is over the sea, which of course gets boring in the long run. But so that it doesn't get boring, there is a lot to read from Homer's Odyssey, as a retelling by Franz Fühmann, and I have added explanations and interesting facts about some historical places where Odysseus might have been or passed by. Also there are always stops in between, so that the individual sections do not become too long.
Now I wish you a lot of fun flying and reading. Koschi.

Koschi.
